Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean when you said we have to pay our RPMS dues to participate in DOSE?
You have to have paid your RPMS dues to have access to the RPMS OwlSpace, and since the DOSE application is on the RPMS OwlSpace, you won’t be able to access the application until you have paid your dues. To pay your dues, please contact the RPMS treasurer Rui Wang (rui143@gmail.com)
I have paid my dues but I am not a member on the OwlSpace site. What’s going on and who do I contact?
It takes some time for OwlSpace access to be set up. In addition to OwlSpace, we also have a separate record with all the paid members. If you are a paid member and do not have OwlSpace access, let us know so we can check your name with our record and send the DOSE application directly to you.
How do I turn in my application?
Please email your completed application to ricedose@gmail.com, and title your application and email with “DOSE12_Last name, First Name” (e.g. DOSE12_Lo, Yian). We receive a large number of applications every year, so these instructions will actually help you make sure that we receive and see your application.
What happens after I send in my application?
After the application deadline, we will review your applications and let you know if you have been selected as a DOSE participant within two weeks of the deadline. After that, we will match you with an appropriate physician and give you the contact information of the physician and the department. You will then be responsible for completing any additional departmental paperwork, and setting up a shadowing schedule with the physician.
There were specific time blocks indicated on DOSE ppt slide at the RPMS General Meeting. Do we have to shadow during those time blocks?
That was an example of how your schedule should look like — e.g. have at least two blocks of times / week to dedicate to shadowing. It doesnt have to be those specific two blocks of times. As a matter of fact, if you become selected as a DOSE participant, we will match you based on your interest AND schedule to one of our collaborating physicians.
What are the average hours per week of shadowing?
It is recommended that you have at least one or two blocks of time to shadow per week, and each block should be about 4 hours or take up the entire morning / afternoon. A block schedule has been the most beneficial for our participants in the past because it helps you gain a better exposure and be a part of a clinical experience that is more wholesome and representative of a physician’s day at work.
How does the student-physician matching process work? Do we shadow physicians in a specific field or do we shadow a variety of fields?
You will be matched to a physician based on your field of interest and schedule. Therefore, you will be shadowing physician in a specific field that you have indicated in your application.
Do we shadow physicians as a group or individually?
In most cases, you will be shadowing physicians individually. Some physicians are able to take 2 students per shift, so you may be shadowing with at the most one other DOSE participant in some cases.
